Fun Things in Tucson: Spanish Colonial Foods, Desert Museum Summer Evening and the Muppets at the Loft

Another warm 100-plus weekend in Tucson, but can the monsoons be far away?  So here is a hot day, cool evening and air conditioned list of options for your Tucson weekend.

Living History: Foods of the Spanish Colonial Period

Today in Tubac from 10am to 2pm!  Volunteers in period clothing describe the native and introduced foods eaten by the Spanish soldiers and civilians who lived in Tubac during the Spanish Colonial period 1752-1776. The event includes cooking demos with samples. Volunteers dressed in period clothing describe the combination of native and introduced foods enjoyed by the Spanish soldiers and civilians who lived in Tubac during the Spanish Colonial period (1752- 1776). Featuring a special display of the bounty of foods from the Old World, New World and surrounding desert used by Tubac cooks, plus cooking demos with samples.  There is more information at tubacpresidio.org

Cool (relatively speaking) Summer Saturday Evening at the Desert Museum: Native American Culture Night

The Summer Saturday Evenings series continues at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum tonight.  This week is  Native American night.  Native American communities are deeply connected to our land and have a great appreciation and knowledge of the plants and animals of the Sonoran Desert region. Enjoy a very special evening of learning about the Sonoran Desert from Native American neighbors as they share traditional ecological knowledge, cultural traditions, stories, cultural performances and food.  For more information, click the link:  Desert Museum Summer Saturday Night

Stay Even Cooler with Movies at Tucson's Cool Loft Cinema

And if the pre-monsoon Tucson heat has totally driven you to inside activities, there is the The Muppet Movie Sing-A-Long, a totally “gonzo” interactive screening of the one-and-only original Muppet Movie, featuring onscreen lyrics to all the film’s classic songs like “The Rainbow Connection,” “Movin’ Right Along,” “Can You Picture That?” and more! And if the Muppets are not your cup of tea, there are some other great flicks showing there as well in air conditioned comfort.  And the snack bar serves wine and local beers!   The Muppets kick off at 7pm tonight.  Here is a link to the Loft for more information on the Muppets Movie and their other current offerings. Quote of the Week: Real Estate, Home and Life

Quite appropriate as I find myself traveling this week.  "How often have I lain beneath rain on a strange roof, thinking of home." - William Faulkner

Fun Things in Tucson: Weird Plants, Bacon and John Wayne

Yeah, that is an odd combination but fortunately they are three different events this weekend.  One suggestion hint for this hot weekend:  Rio Bravo with John Wayne is in the air conditioned Fox Theatre.

Weird Plant Sale at the Tucson Botanical Gardens

A "quirky once-a-year sale devoted to oddball plants and strange pottery" is how the Tucson Botanical Gardens describes their annual Weird Plant Sale.  The sale continues from 8am to 1pm on Saturday June 7.

Arizona Bacon Festival...Right Here in Tucson!

Another one of those funky Tucson events is tonight's Arizona Bacon Festival at Kino Memorial Stadium from 6 to 10pm.  There will be music, local beers and of course an exciting assortment of bacony foods.  Proceeds benefit the non-profit La Frontera of Arizona.

John Wayne's Rio Bravo at the Fox Theatre on Sunday Afternoon

A really fun Western flick with John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson (before the rock band), Angie Dickinson, Ward Bond and the inimitable Walter Brennan. And it was filmed just a couple of miles from where I am typing this, at Old Tucson Studios in the Tucson Mountains.  Sunday at 2pm at the beautifully restored Fox Theatre on West Congress Street.
