Tucson Favs: The Loft Cinema

The Loft Cinema is Tucson's premier independent movie theatre, and frankly the only one I know of where you can enjoy both popcorn and a glass of wine with your movie.

We recently renewed our membership and have been enjoying some great classic films such as Hitchcock's Spellbound and the equally chilling Rebecca, several great Marx Brothers flix and even a sing-along showing of White Christmas with Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby.  Their regular selections include thoughtful documentaries, foreign films (both new and classic) and some fun tongue-in-cheek film festivals (when was the last time you saw Barbarella with Jane Fonda?).

Membership is a terrific deal with discount tickets, a free monthly movie and free! organic popcorn each time you go.  The Loft Cinema also has a great app for your smartphone.

So check their website for current and upcoming showings (Harold and Maude on Valentines Day is a great choice) and go see a good movie.   The Loft Cinema

Quote of the Week: Real Estate and Otherwise...

Gardening is just not the same in Tucson as back east, but it does all begin early in the year with the dream.

"Anyone who thinks gardening begins in the Spring and ends in the fall is missing the best part of the whole year; for gardening begins in January with the dream." - Josephine Nuese

Fun Things in Tucson: The Rogue Theatre's Arcadia

Ryan Parker Knox and Gabriella De Brequet
If you have never seen a Rogue Theatre play, you need to get online and buy tickets for this one NOW!  The Rogue's current production of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia is selling out fast. And they just added an additional matinee for this Saturday.

The story and setting had me intrigued...almost two plays in one...spanning two eras, two hundred years apart, with a hint of a more cerebral Downton Abbey thrown in.  And on stage it is a gem of a of the best the Rogue has ever done.

Don't take my word for it, read what the Arizona Daily Star and the Tucson Weekly have to say.  Then go to the Rogue link and get your tickets now.  They are selling out of most of the remaining performances.

Fun Things in Tucson: "Greener Grass?" at Odyssey Storytelling Friday Night

"Is the grass really greener on the other side of the fence or is it just our imagination?" That is the question posed this month by the folks at Tucson's Odyssey Storytelling.  Six Tucson storytellers will give their 10 minute personal stories revealing their answers this Friday night. The show starts at 7pm at the Fluxx Studios and Gallery, 416 E. 9th St just off Tucson's fabulous 4th Avenue.  Make a night of it with dinner before the show on 4th Avenue and then mingle with the storytellers afterwards over a drink at the Shanty.

Quote of the Week: Real Estate and Otherwise...

A good quote to start off the New Year:
"The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them." - George Bernard Shaw

Advice for Sellers: Stage that Garage!

Sellers get all sorts of advice about staging their home...from their real estate agent, helpful friends and those wacky real estate shows on cable TV.  And yes, a beautifully staged and decluttered home with nice furniture, lighting, and accessories can help the prospective Buyers picture themselves in that home.

But one of the most important rooms to many Buyers is usually neglected.  The garage!

Too often the house is made beautiful at the expense of the garage, which prospective Buyers can hardly see for the packed boxes and sporting equipment stacked nearly to the ceiling.  This is especially true in Tucson where the garage is often the only storage space in the house.

My recommendation is for Sellers is to just begin packing for the eventual move and to place those boxes in temporary storage.  The cost is not that much and the clean and spacious garage lets the prospective Buyers envision all of the empty space where they will be able to store all of their stuff.

Stat of the Week: More Than 3 Million US Homeowners Regained Equity in 2013

Rebounding home prices lifted more than 3 million US homeowners out of the red and into the black, in terms of having equity in their homes.  The same study, by CoreLogic, says that more than two thirds of homes with a mortgage now show at least 20% equity.

6.4 million residential properties are still showing negative equity, with Arizona being among the top states in that regard.  While the Phoenix market has rebounded sharply, the $159,500 median sale price in the most recent Tucson MLS report is still well below the 2005 market peak of $226,465.  But that is a nice rebound from the recent Tucson low of $117,500 recorded in 2011.

Fun Things in Tucson: The Loft Cinema presents Hitchcock Blondes

We always enjoy seeing classic films at Tucson's Loft Cinema and January is bringing some really good ones.  This month the Loft is presenting Hitchcock Blondes...some of Alfred Hitchcock's best movies featuring his favorite blondes.

Saturday night at 7pm is one of my personal favorites...Rebecca, with the recently departed Joan Fontaine.  And one of my favorite creepy movie characters, Mrs. Danvers, played by Dame Judith Anderson. Later in the month will be such classics as Rear Window, Vertigo and The Man Who Knew Too Much.

For more details, click the link Loft Cinema presents Hitchcock Blondes

And while you are at it, consider a membership in the Loft, which will get you a discount on each movie you see AND a free bag of popcorn each time.  For membership in the Loft, go to Loft Cinema Membership
